What is Heart Failure
Heart failure is a chronic condition where the heart cannot pump blood effectively to meet the body’s needs. It doesn’t mean the heart has stopped working, but rather it is weakened or stiffened. Heart failure affects thousands of Canadians and is a leading cause of hospitalization, particularly among older adults.
Several factors increase the likelihood of developing heart failure:
- High blood pressure and heart disease
- Previous heart attacks or other heart conditions
- Diabetes and obesity
- Smoking and excessive alcohol use
- Family history of heart disease
Approximately 750,000 Canadians are currently living with heart failure, with over 100,000 new cases diagnosed annually
- More than 100,000 new cases diagnosed each year
- It is one of the top reasons for hospital admissions in Canada
- It affects 1 of 5 adults over their lifetime
- Men have higher rates of hospitalizations for heart failure than women, though rates are rising for both
Heart failure prevalence is expected to rise as Canada’s population ages. Ongoing research, early detection, and improved treatments are essential to reduce hospitalizations and improve quality of life for Canadians living with heart failure.
